Intro: MVP launch is the start, not the end

After an MVP launches, the most common mistake is rushing to add new features. The real purpose of an MVP is to test assumptions; features added before the test results arrive are resources spent in the wrong direction.
The first 90 days are a measurement + learning + narrow roadmap phase. We map this period month-by-month below. Each month has a fixed goal, deliverable, and decision gate.
Core principle: at the end of 90 days you should have three things: (1) the product's real usage profile, (2) which feature affects which metric, (3) a data-backed priority list for phase 2.

Month 1 — Build data infrastructure, observe, listen

Goal: make the product measurable. Output: installed analytics (Mixpanel / PostHog / Amplitude), funnel definitions, retention dashboard, NPS / feedback collection, weekly user interviews (3-5 people).
Core metrics to measure: activation rate (% reaching first value), day-1 / day-7 / day-30 retention, conversion funnel (signup-to-payment), time-to-aha-moment, churn reasons.
No new features this month. Only bug fixes + monitoring improvements. The team's full attention is on building a solid measurement system. Wrong metric = wrong decision; the foundation must be solid.
Bonus: 30-minute interviews with 5-10 users. The answer to "How would you feel if you couldn't use this product anymore?" is a product-market fit indicator (Sean Ellis test).

Month 2 — Hypotheses + priorities + narrow roadmap

Goal: turn Month 1 data into hypotheses and build a 3-5-item narrow roadmap. Output: prioritized feature list (with RICE or ICE scoring), hypothesis and measurement criteria for each item.
RICE = Reach × Impact × Confidence / Effort. Every feature idea fits this frame. "Reach" is real user count (measured in Month 1); "Impact" is which metric will move how (e.g. retention by +10%); "Confidence" is the strength of the assumption (50-100%); "Effort" is dev weeks.
Common trap: "this feature would be cool too" coming from inside the team. Without data, no priority. Every item must be tied to a number. A feature with no "activation 20% → 40%" target goes to backlog, not roadmap.
End-of-month decision gate: roadmap item #1 gets approved for development. No approval, no feature; the negotiation is on the data side.

Month 3 — First growth: one feature + one experiment

Goal: ship the first roadmap item + validate the learning with an experiment. Output: new feature in production, A/B test results, day-1 / day-30 metric comparison (before/after).
The first new feature should be small and measurable. Not large scope like "add an AI chatbot"; concrete like "10% speed improvement on checkout page". Small wins build the foundation for big wins.
A/B test discipline: show the new feature to 50% of users, hide it from the other 50%. Collect data 7-14 days, check statistical significance (at least 100 conversions / variant). If results are bad, roll back. This discipline blocks gut decisions.
End of month, build the new roadmap for month 4. If data is good, ship similar features; if bad, re-evaluate the hypothesis. The process is cyclical, not linear.

5 mistakes to avoid in the first 90 days

1. Adding features without data. Numbers, not feelings. Every feature is tied to a hypothesis.
2. Too much parallel work. 3-5-item roadmap; not 15. Without discipline, focus dissolves.
3. Skipping user interviews. Numbers tell you "what"; interviews tell you "why". Both are needed.
4. Premature optimization. Optimizing 100-user infrastructure for 1M is wasted time.
5. Postponing the pivot decision. If month 3 disproves the hypothesis, the pivot decision doesn't wait until month 6. Early decisions reduce cost.

Conclusion: which questions should the 90 days answer?

By the end of 90 days, you should have clear answers to: What are users actually using the product for (in reality, not in assumption)? Which feature drives retention most? Which user segment is highest-value? Which feature has the highest ROI for phase 2?
If those answers are missing, the 90 days were wasted. Features were added, code grew, but learning is zero. Post-MVP planning exists to prevent this outcome.
